| Ping and traceroute are blocked by design. The news servers run firewall software that only permits access to the TCP ports required to provide Usenet news service. The news servers will block most protocols including ICMP, which is used by ping and traceroute. The firewall is in place to prevent DOS (denial of service) attacks. |
